1560's Venetian GownThis outfit is was inspired by a Venetian portrait by Paolo Veronese. It wasn't intended to be an
exact copy, but I did want to keep it fairly close to the original. The gown is made from cotton
velveteen that I dyed myself (it was originally hot pink). The cutwork sleeves
were done with a modified version of reverse applique, and the design for the sleeves was taken from
another anonymous Italian painting. I am also wearing
a linen camicia, a silk embroidered partlet, and some fabulous reproduction reticella lace cuffs.
You can read more details about research and construction for this project in my
Venetian dress diary.
